Matt working Casino
Well the grandkids are gone, they left yesterday, and it’s pretty quiet around here now. Sure miss them.
Even with the kids here there was still work to be done with the horses. Casino, as you can see in the picture was worked by Matt in the round pen one of the days that Matt was here. Casino continues to make progress, but we had a time on Friday. I had done a little ground work with him, as I do before I ride him. Then we started to work on circles in the arena. When I asked him to trot in the circle he resisted and tired to run sideways with me in the arena. When he got to the rail and the corner of the arena we had a little conversation about what had happened. I thought that we had worked it out when he did it again. I’m not sure why he acted or reacted that way, and by the end of our training session he was doing his circles at a trot like a camp. Casino is a very sensitive horse. I was getting on him the week before and accidently poked him, very easily with my off foot and he squirted to the left. It took a little to get him to settle down, but he did and was fine after that. All of these things, I think, are a result of him just being very sensitive to touch. I’m thinking it’s just who he is and only time will help that, if it helps at all. He is the kind of horse that can be as calm as can be, and then, without warning, because of something I did, get his pants in a wad. Will work at more and more control on this little guy.
Pepe is learning control as well. While his owner was here last Tuesday, I was showing Laurie some of the control exercises that I use under saddle. We were working on getting him to yield to my leg and spur, when he got a little excited and was trying to get me off his back. Again, this horse is very dominate and does not like anyone telling him what to do or when to do it. It was not that big a deal and I was in no danger, but it showed Laurie that when this horse is pushed or asked to do something he does not want to do, he can and is throwing a fit. This will take time to over come with him but it can be done. Not sure that we will have enough time here to get it completely under control but Laurie has some pretty good skill herself and I think that if she sticks with the program she will, at least, be on her way..
Better get to it. But first…….
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
