Ted in the double reins!
Another good day with the horses. Casino is a funny little horse. Just like his owner, Jene, said. He will be going along just fine and then something will get his attention and he will get a little excited. He always seems to come back, mentally, but it will be the simplest things that set him off.
Pepe worked yesterday in the double reins. I learned this method from Al Ragusin. http://www.trainingyourownhorse.com/
It is a very simple method that really works. With a horse that is well on his way, it can change everything for the horse and rider. I had a person out here watching me use the double rein method in my training and ask me the question: “Isn’t using the double reins like a crutch”? I thought for a minute, trying to figure out what she was saying, or implying. I’m still not sure what she was saying but I think I know what she was implying. She felt that using this method was a crutch because I was not using a method that she was familiar with, or that the double reins were so simple that it couldn’t work, or I did not have the skill to get it done the old fashion way. I had been teaching horses collection long before Al came into my life so I was pretty sure that was not the case.
It got me to thinking about methods or programs, how some methods, that work, were just to hard on the horse, and me and so I choose not to use those methods. It got me to thinking about how other things in our lives have changed. How in the past I had used a shovel to dig a ditch to lay a water line, but the first time I used a backhoe, was the last time I dug a ditch by hand. Some folks choose to use a method of training that is rich in history and culture, which I think is great, but to think that a method, like the double reins, is a crutch because it is easy for me and the horse is, well BS.
Most people will never ride enough in their lives to have really good hands with a horse. Most people will never ride their horses enough period. Al had developed a method of teaching a horse about collection that is easy on the horse. Because it is easy on the horse the horse learns to collect faster then any other method I have used and is not afraid the method. And, what’s more, the owner, rider keeps his or her, bad hands out of the mix while the horse learns to collect. Once the horse understands what collection is all about, he will be able to teach the rider.
I guess we all, will at times, turn up our noses to things we don’t know or understand. Folks, trainers, that are trying to make a living at training horses, want you to by into their method of training, the coolaid, as one of my friends calls it. And I too have a WAY of training that has worked really well for me over the years, and I think it will work good for you too. But to say that something is a crutch or cheating just because you don’t understand it, is short sighted.
Al has won more horse events across disciplines to prove that his double rein method works. I think, if you give it a try, you too can train your horse to collect and have a better horse.
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
