Got a call from Butch last night and Jet the horse has a home. We had worked, last year, to find him a place with a young couple who live close to El Paso but things happened and they could not take him. These same kids have gotten things straightened out and they are ready for him. So Butch and I will be taking Jet to his new home this morning. They will love him and I know he is going to love being there. We will miss the old man around here, but it's time for him to find a place where he can still work a little and rest a lot.
Had riding lessons with Stan and Ruth. Ruth continues to make good progress as her confidence grows. Stan is working hard and doing well but I think he thinks too much about riding, instead of just letting it happen. He is getting better, but getting him to just relax is a problem.
I think that relaxing when you are riding is a very hard concept to understand if you don't get to ride much. I see folks hanging on with their hands and with their legs. What happens when you do that is your horse never gets a chance to relax. They always feel the pressure of these aids, that never go away, and they never get a chance to just go down the trail or walk in the arena. I think this happens to experienced riders too. They call it contact. But what they don't understand is you can't have constant contact with your horse or he is going to give out, get ticked or just stop working for you. He will get stiff and bracey and will not want to move forward. There really needs to be a give and take. We humans, are really good at taking, but we suck, for the most part, at giving. Giving with our hands, which is a long loose rein when our horses do the right thing, and riding with a relaxed seat so our horse is not always under pressure to perform. At times we are asking our horses to perform with out our knowing it and we don't understand why our horses won't stand still and relax... Most of the time, it's because we don't know how to do that either...
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
