It won't be long and Kathy and I will be at the clinic up the Mimbres Valley. We always have a good time at Sue's and the folks that show up are always looking for and opportunity to learn. We still have a couple of spots open for the all day Saturday clinic and some opening for private lessons on Sunday 15th. If you have been thinking about coming to the clinic wait no longer. Email or call to save your spot in the clinic.
Rode Casino yesterday, working on yielding to leg pressure. He will need this skill for lots of things but one of the big ones is being able to open a gate from his back. We worked on an exercise I call the box. The box is where I will ask a horse to walk forward, then stop. I will let him relax for a few seconds then holding the rein so he cannot walk forward, but not pulling on them so he steps back, I lay my leg on whatever side I want him to move away from. When he takes a step in that direction I release any pressure and ask him to walk forward. I don't care if the corner of this square in not perfect, just as long as he makes the effort to move off my leg pressure. In time he will start to anticipate the move and rather then look outside the square, he will put his nose inside that direction I'm going to ask him to go... It's a dandy exercise and they really seem to get it...
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
