Yep, we have had a little weather here over the weekend. We got about a foot of snow Friday night. Most of it is gone already but we sure needed the wet. It does, however jam up the training a bit. It's times like this that I wish we had an indoor arena so we would not have to worry about the weather, but truth is, we don't get much of this kind of weather to worry to much about it. So I do a little ground work with my horses when the weather is like this. Not much riding, mostly because it is pretty muddy around here and I don't want them to slip and fall with me on their back. That has happened.
When Kathy and I managed a ranch in Az. I had to go out on a snowy morning to sort off some steers that a fella was going to come and get. I took Ziggy with me, the big yellow horse on the front page of my website, and we were just getting started when Zig made a cut to the right and his legs went out from under him. I rolled off of him when he was on the ground. We both got up and I checked him and me for any damage. There was none so I thought, we just need to slow down a little and we can get this job done. We started in again and it wasn't long before Zig and I were both on the ground again. I realize that there is no slow for Zig when it comes to working cows, so we headed back to the house, at a walk, and you guessed it, had coffee. Zig did not have coffee, he had oats or something like that, can't remember.
So, just be careful out their if you have no choice but to have to get out with your horses in bad weather. I have come to realize, in my older age, notice I did not say old age, that their is nothing I have to do, that is so important, that can't wait. Especially if there is the risk of me or my horses getting hurt. I hope to be doing this a long time and I only will if I use my head.
Speaking of Coffee!
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
