I don’t usually write on Saturdays but thought I would let you all see Thunder in his big boy clothes.
We had a good session yesterday. One thing I have found with horses, especially nervous or scared horses is sometimes they have to be afraid to know they don’t have to be afraid. To do that you have to set it up so that they are as safe as you can make it, then expose them to the things that scare them. You have to give them time to go from being afraid to realizing that nothing is going to hurt them. When that happens you can see it in their eyes, and how they move, that they understand what is going on. Then they will accept it, what ever IT is. This takes time, the magic pill, and repetition, and you have to be willing. Most people don’t have the skill or the nerve to get their horse thru this, so if you are going to attempt it, and you never have, you may want to talk to someone first.
It’s only been a few days that Thunder has been here but I can see a change in him. He use to leave his stall when I would come to his gate, he was nervous and scared about what was going to happen. He would go to the far side of his pen before he would think about catching me. Now he steps outside his stall, turns around, waits for me to step outside the stall and then comes right to me. That my friends is progress.
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
