Yesterday Thunder’s mom came over to work with him. We rode for a bit in the arena, me reminding Cindi what her riding program should look like for the next few months. Things that I would continue to work with him on if he stayed here. It was just a short review of what she already knew and a brief explanation of what lies ahead for the two of them. Then out we went for a little walk about. We rode a small circle around the barn, about 2-3 miles. They both did really well. Cindi was happy with the progress that Thunder has made here with me. Just before we got back to the barn my buddy and neighbor Mark came riding up on his pony. This was a great chance for Cindi and Thunder to work on controlling their emotions and to help Cindi understand what she would need to do if, and when this happens when they go home. Sure enough when Mark rode up Thunder got a little excited and started to mill around and get nervous. I coached Cindi thru the exercises that she has been working on in the arena that help Thunder to settle down. It did not take long a few minutes and a few circles and he was done. Then as we headed back to the barn he started to get nervous again. We stopped again and Cindi started the exercises again and again Thunder settled down. When we got to the barn he got excited again, after all he’s home. We did some small circles at the barn and in just a few minutes he was relaxed and paying attention to Cindi. They both did really good.
The magic pill is powerful medicine. 30 days may seem like a long time to us, cause we count time, but to a horse it means nothing. He does not wear a Timex so has no clue, no concept of time as we do. It can be a very hard thing to understand about horses. People as, “How long will it take to get my horse to do”? what ever it is. I always say, it will take as much time as it takes. I guess what I’m trying to say is 30 days is not much time to fix any problem. But we, humans, have to live within time. Time means everything to us. Time is money as they say. But to try and put that on a horse is unfair and does not work. It will take Thunder and Leo time for them to make lasting changes in the way they see OUR world. That means their owners will have to step up to the plate now. Do the best they can, and get help when and if they need it…
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
