![]() Pocket enjoying the rain! It has not rained here in months, not really sense last year, so the rain we got yesterday was much needed. We got almost an inch. The arena and road will be pretty muddy for a day or so but it’s worth it. I had a good day with Pepe and Casino yesterday. Did just a little work with Casino and then let him stand at the rail for part of the day. Took Pepe out for a long ride, mostly at a trot or a canter. What I have found with horses that really want to go is, sometimes they have to go to know they don’t have to go. What I mean by that is they need to trot for a long ways or canter for a long way to learn that they could be doing that for a long time. It does not take much before they will start to understand that, and rather then be in a big hurry to leave the barn at a trot, they will settle into a walk and hope that’s all they have to do for the day. That takes a lot of effort on our part as well. It’s much nicer to just walk and enjoy the ride, but in order to get our horses there; sometimes we have to ride at a trot or a canter for a long period of time. Not everyone is up to that. This is the fastest way I have found to get a horse to think about walking if they just want to go when you start out. It works. Give it a go. Coffee time.
