Saturday morning in Deming NM was warm... ok... was hot... but the folks that came out for the demo seem to really enjoy what they saw and learned.. I have more pictures below... Round pen work is something that folks have written about and there have been tons of DVD sold on the subject but the thing that I have found is most of them do not really explain why we use a round pen... what do we hope to accomplish when we are in the round pen.. and when to quit... I don't know how many horses come to me and when I put them in the round pen the only thing they do is run... they have no idea what's going on and someone has taught them that running is what you do in the round pen... what I stressed yesterday was the first thing you do when you get in the round pen with your horse is NOTHING... that's right NOTHING... give the horse a chance to relax and and check out the round pen... even if he has been in there a million times there has probably been other horses or critters in there so let him smell around.. This will give you a chance to determine where your horses mind is... is he interested in you? Or can you tell that he could care less that you are even in the pen with him? His actions will tell you a lot about what is on your horses mind... So take advantage of the time that you are doing nothing and watch...
Folks there had great questions. The lady in the photo above asked if you have to continue to maintain your place as leader AFTER you have done all this work... What a great question.. and the answer is YES.. you will not have to work so hard to keep that position with your horse but your horse will from time to time test to see if you are still a good leader.. See for your horse it's all about surviving. So he is counting on you to be what you profess to be and that's a good leader, and from time to time he will check to see if you still are... That does not mean that he will try to kick you or bight you or be violent in any way... but he may lean on you... try to walk through you... just to see if you will allow that.. if you do ... in his mind you are becoming weak as a leader and he will try to assume more of that role.... if you allow it...
So it was great.. I hope that we are able to help folks there with their horses.. there were some there that were thinking about a clinic or having me come and work with them one on one... I really look forward to the future and helping where we can...
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
