Yesterday was pretty windy.....again.....but Mr G and I did our thing... as you probably know G will go home next Wed... I was spending a lot of time riding him and when I went back to the ground work...for review it was as if he had never done any of the exercises before... so the past couple of days I have been spending more time on the ground... I firmly believe that horses learn who they are and how they should behave on the ground... when we get to the saddle we can refine those qualities but if they don't have them on the ground they won't have them in the saddle.. and they will be harder to get in the saddle... so we have gone back to some basic work with G. Had him doing his exercises and then got him to just some barrels to make it a little interesting for him... he never missed a beat and cleared them like he was a hunter jumper..... Norma brought the trailer that she will be taking him home in so he could get use to it... so when she pulled in I had her load him in the trailer... he was a little cautious and that's fine... but it was only a couple of min. and he was loading like a champ....
So guess what I'm trying to say is if you only have a few min. with your horse.. you would be better off to work on his ground skills then to ride him... work on his round pen skills... teaching him to be caught.... or at the end of the lead teaching him to be soft in your hand... and save the ride time for when you can really have time...that way your not rushed when you saddle or on your ride....
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
