Another good day with Thunder the horse. As I’m working with him I am finding out that he is a very nervous and unsure horse. Who knows why that is, just is. The good thing about being here in our barn at Ted and Heidi’s is there is always something going on. Sounds, people, dogs, lots of things, so I’m hoping that we can help him a little with that. Some horses, like people are just nervous, over active. Some of this has to do with his breeding. He is a Tennessee Walker and guess what they were made to do? That’s right walk. Some horses are just watchful. They think that something is trying to get them all the time. Horses like this tend to be a little more attached to the barn and to their herd mates. Horses find comfort, one of the things that a horse needs, in the herd. So for you and I to help them with this problem we have to understand what they need and then do the best we can to provide it.
He does not like to be caught. Unlike Charlie the horse who was here last year. He loved for you to come in the pen and catch him. But not Thunder. He would rather be left alone. So teaching him to be caught has been very important. He doesn’t like it but he come to me and will lower his head to have the halter put on.
Sometime I think we make to big a deal about our horses wanting to come to us. Don’t get me wrong I want my horses to come to me to be caught and I teach them that, but early on, I don’t make a big deal about it. They will, in time, figure out that being with me is a good thing and good things happen when they do. So it’s one of those things that I just chip away at, and in time it always seems to come around.
Today more of the same with Thunder.
His owner came by yesterday as well and I got a chance to work with her and her horse. I think that she is pleased with his progress even after only a couple of days. He will make more progress. We talked about what she will need to do in order to provide Thunder with a program when he gets home. Some folks that own horses don’t want to be trainer. I always tell people, if you are going to own a horse you are going to be a training. Does not matter if you want to be or not, you are. Cindi understands this and is eager to get the chance to help her boy down the trail..
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
