Yesterday, when I was riding Tucson in the arena, I got to thinking about time. In the passed year I have really been trying to work on making sure I give, whatever horse I’m working, the time that they need. Need to learn a skill or move. I started using a watch, wristwatch, to make sure that I’m giving my horse enough time, time to work on whatever the skill is we are working on at the time.
What I have found is without a watch, or clock, some thing to keep track of how much time I’m spending, I was not spending enough time on a skill or, more importantly, giving my horse enough time to rest. Seems like when I don’t use my watch, I find myself not spending enough time on the skill or rest.
So what I have been doing now, for sometime, is taking whatever time is needed to teach the horse a skill, then checking my watch to see how much time it took me to do that, then giving the horse that same amount of time to rest. I have found that by doing that, my horses are making faster progress in my program.. You may want to try it too.
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
