Ziggy and Bars
Started working with Ziggy yesterday. Ziggy is a big yellow horse that I got a few years ago because he was trying to buck his owner off. Seems I get some really good horses that way. He is a very powerful horse with a great mind. I have used him in the pasts for working cattle, dragging calfs to the fire and as a pack horse on occasions. He is a dandy. He's really tall, not sure how many hands, but a bunch of them. I'm wanting to get him doing more classical moves in the arena. He is a horse that was used a lot in the arena in the past, or so I have been told, and he does not really like the arena much. He unseated me once at a roping. Was not his fault. He had been trying to tell me all day that he was not happy and I just did not pay attention.
I can put just about anyone on the horses I own. I trust them. But I tell everyone that rides them, when they ask does he buck?. The answer is YES. All horses can, and will buck, given the right set of circumstances. But I do everything I can, in their training, to teach them that bucking is not a good thing, that bucking is a lot of work.
Horses will usually buck for two reasons. The first is they are startled or frightened. The second is they are fighting or trying to defend themselves. If I've done my training right they will know that I am the leader and they know, cause they are horses, that you don't kick the dominate horse in the herd, me. But, even I , can startle a horse. So I try to be careful when I'm working around them or I see someone else in the barn that is working around them. If I am coming up to the barn and I see that someone has a horse in the alley way brushing, or whatever they may be doing, and I know they don't know I'm coming I will call out or start to whistle, make some sort of noise so that the handler AND the horse know I'm coming. I don't know how many times I have had someone just appear out of no where only to scare the crap out of me and my horse, sending us both running to the other end of the barn. I try to teach folks that this is a time when someone can, and in time will, get hurt. Folks forget that they are working with a living, breathing, thinking animal, that has lived for thousands of years because the react first, and acted later, after they know that nothing is going to kill them. We are suppose to be the smart of the two spieces so it just seems resonable to me that, it would be easier for me to understand the horse then it will ever be for the horse to understand me, so I'm the one that's got to make the effort, cause the horse will never understand me. Heck most of the time I don't understand me either.
Will try and keep you updated with info on what the heck I'm doing with horses and music.
